Crackdowns are usually made by, not on, the police, but in late June
an Ecuadorean court found six police officers guilty of conspiring against state
security on 30 September 2010, when a police uprising briefly saw President
Rafael Correa sequestered in a police hospital in Quito. These are the first
sentences passed down in relation to the uprising in which the government claims
1,199 members of the security forces, mainly police, participated. The ruling
came days after the defence minister, Javier Ponce, said that a new military
police unit would be set up within the armed forces. Although Ponce sought to
deny it, the creation of this unit is clearly a vote of no confidence in the
police.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1431 words.
